Evaluation of Geothermal Potential in Geneva

Since 2016, Dropstone has been a committed partner of the Industrial Services of Geneva (SIG) within the framework of the cantonal GEothermies.ch programme. Through sustained projects of hydrogeological investigations, we have contributed to the strategic assessment of geothermal potential and to a refined conceptual understanding of the principal aquifer systems across the canton.

Our work has encompassed the major Rhône aquifers — Montbrillant, Charmilles, Saint-Jean, Lancy and Onex — as well as the transboundary aquifer systems of the Genevois and Puplinge sectors (Thônex, Eaux-Vives). We have also undertaken detailed investigations of the Montfleury aquifer (Bellevue, Petit-Saconnex), advancing the structural and hydraulic characterisation of these complex groundwater bodies.

Our scope of services integrates:

  • Advanced interpretation of geological datasets (including SOLSTISS);
  • Design and execution of field measurement campaigns;
  • Strategic siting of exploratory boreholes;
  • Technical supervision of more than twenty drilling operations;
  • Monitoring of hydrogeological instrumentation and equipment;
  • Pumping tests, groundwater sampling and physico-chemical analyses;
  • Numerical modelling of groundwater flow regimes.

By combining rigorous fieldwork with robust analytical and modelling methodologies, we have reduced hydrogeological uncertainty, improved aquifer delineation, and identified zones with strong potential for low-enthalpy geothermal development.
